LeftField - news in Project Management

www.project-management.com.au

Welcome to the latest news and views from LeftField Project Solutions.

Changes in our Environment

As we move from Summer into Autumn and the daylight hours start to dwindle, we can’t help but notice changes in our physical environment.  Some good (such as not having to mow the grass quite so frequently) and some not so good (as we frantically search for warmer clothes on a fresh morning!).

However, changes in our project environments can go by unnoticed. We are usually very thorough when a project is being initiated and we dutifully identify and analyse project stakeholders, issues and risks.  Doug DeCarlo’s “four business questions” are very relevant when initiating a project i.e.

  • Who needs what and why?   (Project Owner and Manager)
  • What will it take to get it?   (Project Manager)
  • Can we get what it takes?   (Project Owner)
  • Is it worth it?   (Project Funder)

However, when we’re in the middle of a project and we’re up to our eyeballs in schedules, meetings, budget reports, typically we are not so dutiful around scanning our project environments.  We probably can’t answer the following questions:

  • How well do we understand the project’s current environment?
  • Have we got appropriate mechanisms in place to manage this?

If we reword Doug DeCarlo’s 4th question as “is it still worth it?”, then a thorough understanding of a project’s environment may lead to the Project Funder making a different judgement about whether a project continues.

Changes  at LeftField

We are sad to announce that one of our partners has resigned from LeftField to pursue some exciting business opportunities in her own company.  Lea Symonds will now devote all of her focus to her long-term business Personal Strengths Australia, and no longer be working as a Principal Consultant with LeftField.

We thank Lea for her ideas, energy and the passion she has shown for the people side of projects.  We will miss her insights, expertise and companionship as we move forward and we thank her for the invaluable contribution she has made to the LeftField partnership, since it was formed in 2004.

IPMA Project Management World Congress

The Australian Institute of Project Management has been chosen to host the 25th IPMA World Congress 2011 in Brisbane in October.

With the International Project Management Association representing the national Project Management associations of some 50 countries, this congress is going to be the global conference of the year.

The Congress theme ‘Delivering the Promise’ strikes at the very core of what project and program management is fundamentally about. We promise our customers specific outcomes – our challenge then becomes delivering on those promises.

Sharyn and Bronwyn will not only be attending the conference, but have also submitted abstracts for consideration for the program.

Hope to see you there!

Regardless of whether you can or can’t make the international conference, don’t forget you can always hear from interesting speakers at local chapter events.

We're all ears!

You’ve heard from us - we’d love to hear from you!  Tell us about your experiences and insights.  We also welcome any suggestions for topics you would like covered in future editions.
